Lemon Essential Oil Reduces Allergic Reactions

An allergen is a substance that causes an allergic reaction.  Some allergens include animal dander, dust, fungal spores, pollen and mold.  Allergens in and of themselves are harmless but for some people, the immune system is tricked into thinking they are dangerous.   In such cases, the immune system produces allergen-specific antibodies which work their way to the  lungs, nose, throat, eyes and sinuses.  The antibodies wait  in these body parts to defend the individual if ever he/she is exposed to the”befouled” allergen again.  At the time of re-exposure, the allergen  specific antibodies swing into action producing and releasing a defensive chemical called histamines intended to “protect” the lungs, nose and eyes.   These histamines are what cause the swelling, itching, redness, irritation, mucus build up, and headaches that are commonly experienced in an allergic response.  All of this is due to an over active immune system that is defending against perceived rather than real threats.

Lemon Essential Oil and Allergies

Lemon essential oil has the ability to chemically support the body and help overcome hypersensitivity experienced with exposure to infections, bacteria, parasites, microorganisms and harmful toxins.  Of all essential oils, lemon is among the most effective in supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes.  Lemon essential oil supports detoxification through the blood and liver.  With the support of lemon essential oil, the immune system is more robust because there are less pathogens and foreign invaders to deal with.  A healthier immune system is less prone to becoming over-active, perceiving false threats leading to allergic reactions.  In short, clearing toxins reduces the load on the detoxification pathways to allow the body to better filter and deal with allergens. Lemon essential oil is highly supportive in this clearing process.

One more quick happy point about lemon essential oil is that it supports the immune system by stimulating white blood cell production.  White blood cells protect us against disease and foreign invaders. Similar to the detox effect of lemon essential oil, the ability to boost white blood cells nurtures healthy immune responses and allergic reactions are less likely.
